Robert Barker shot and killed John Eason at Locust Grove school on Hebron Ridge last Sunday afternoon. The men were brothers in law, Eason having married Barker's sister. The testimony at the examining trial was somewhat conflicting, but it seems that Barker called Eason aside telling him he wished to have a peaceable conversation with him. After some words a scuffle ensued and Eason is said to have drawn his weapon and fired at Barker. When the latter drew his weapon, a 38 calibre improved Smith & Wesson, and fired either four or five shots into Eason's body, killing him almost instantly.
The trouble seems to have originated over a daughter of Barker's who is attending school in Richmond, who was receiving attentions from a young man in the Hebron neighborhood, to which Barker objected, and accused Eason and his wife, Barker's sister, of aiding and abetting, and when Barker remonstrated with them for their conduct, he claims that Eason threatened his life. Barker went to Bryantsville and purchased a pistol, and the meeting at Locust Grove was their first meeting since the alleged threats, and had the above deplorable results. Barker had his examining trial before county Judge Ford Wednesday and was acquitted.
Eason, the dead man, was about thirty years of age and leaves a wife and two children; Barker is a widower and has four children, one of them an infant in arms, which was being raised by his sister, the wife of the dead man. Barker is about forty years of age.
Both men were good citizens of their community, bore good reputations, and have never been in trouble before. The affair is a very regrettable one.

BARKER CONVICTED - Robert Barker was found guilty by a jury in the circuit court last Friday of the killing of John Eason and his punishment fixed at confinement in the penitentiary from two to twenty one years. The killing occurred at Locust Grove School house on Hebron Ridge in this county on Sunday afternoon March 16, 1913. The men were brothers-in-law, the deceased Eason having married a sister of Barker. The difficulty which preceded the killing had its origin in matters pertaining to their domestic relations. The dead man was about thirty years of age and left a wife and two children. Barker is a widower and has four children, one of whom at the time of the killing was an infant in arms and was being cared for by the wife of the dead man. The prosecution was conducted by Commonwealth Attorney E. V. Puryear assisted by attorney J. E. Robinson. The defendant was represented by Attorney J. I. Hamilton and L. L. Walker.

BARKER ACQUITTED - In the Circuit court yesterday, the case against R. L. Barker charged with the killing of John Eason in March 1913, resulted in the acquittal for the defendant. This was the third trial of this case, the two previous ones having been hung juries.
