University of Kentucky company of Pershing Rifles honorary military organization will take part in the Fifth Corps Area competitive drills to be held May 11 and __ at Bloomington, Ind.
Other entrants will be from the Universities of Indiana, Illinois and Dayton and Ohio University.
The University of Kentucky company has won the championship for the last two years. The meet last year was held in Stoll Field, the University of Kentucky's football field, before more than 10,000 spectators.
Charles W Kaufman, Nicholasville, is captain of the Kentucky company. He also is a member of Om'cron Delta Kappa, honary campus leaders' fraternity; Scabbard and Blade honorary military fraternity, and is president of the Kentucky chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. 04/04/1934 Nicholasville News : GUNMEN ARE HELD AS SUSPECTS - ARRESTS FOLLOW GUN BATTLE WITH SOMERSET OFFICERS - DESPERADOES THOUGH TO LINKED WITH KAUFMAN MURDER.
Acting on a report that two automobile loads of armed men were in the vicinity, officials took extra precautions Sunday afternoon to prevent the liberation of Neal Bowman, 30, Southern Ohio bad man being held in jail at Somerset under $50,000 bond on a series of charges.
Meanwhile, officials of Pulaski and adjoining counties sought to link Bowman and Stanley Mercer, 20, of Wayne county who was arrested with him Saturday night after a gun battle with police, with crime committed recently in central Kentucky.
Both Bowman and Mercer are under $50,000 bonds on charges of highway robbery, malicious shooting with intent to kill, operating a stolen automobile, carrying concealed weapon, vagrancy and transporting whisky. It had not been determined whether to try the two men in Kentucky or turn Bowman over to officials of Ohio and other states that seek him.
Two more arrests were made as an aftermath of the capture of Bowman and Mercer. Lloyd Copenhaver, 23, of Frazier, KY., and Mrs. Maggie Meadors Mercer, wife , were held on charges of highway robbery and other offences said Mrs. Mercer told them married her sister several weeks ago.
As officers investigated recent crimes in which they believed Bowman and Mercer might have been implicated, a postal inspector expressed the opinion the pair were involved in the theft of a bag of mail several weeks ago at London, KY. The suspects were said to have been in London on the day of the robbery.
In addition to other small jobs, officers said Bowman admitted having robbed a drug store at Glasgow and a grocery store st Dry Ridge recently. Officers from Jessamine and Garrard counties expressed belief Bowman, Mercer, and Copenhaver were involved in the slaying on Marth 8 of George Kaufman and the wounding of Will Kaufman at Camp Nelson. Descriptions of the Kaufmans' assailants, they said, tallied with those of the men arrested.
It was later reported that Mercer made a sworn statement implicating Bowman with shooting George Kaufman, but Bowman denied firing the fatal bullet.
Monday the accused were taken to Frankfort for safe keeping.
Seely Herron, of Danville, who had been in Lexington jail charged with implication in the murder of George Kaufman was released after Mercer's confession.

04/11/1934 Nicholasville News : NEW CLUES IN KAUFMAN MURDER - STANLEY MERCER MAKES ANOTHER STATEMENT THAT HOMER FRANKLIN WAS KILLED BY BOWMAN AND BODY THROWN IN LAKE HERRINGTON
According to alleged confession of Stanley Mercer who charged that Neal Bowman, gunman and hold up man fired the fatal shot which killed George Kaufman and wounded Will Kaufman while attempting to hold up Kaufman's Bros. store at Camp Nelson on March 8, also murdered Homer Franklin of Jamestown, Tenn., tied a rock to his body and cast it in Lake Herrington at Kennedy bridge.
Mercer stated that Franklin wanted to go home and Bowman told him no one could leave him. Mercer said Franklin was with them on the night Kaufman was killed, and Bowman forced Franklin to go to the place where he was shot. At the place where the body was thrown over the cliff were found foot prints and a stone had been freshly removed from a rock fence and a belt which belonged to the dead man was found.
Mercer also said Loyd Copenhaver witnesses the slaying which he confessed to Sheriff John Combs who went to Somerset to interrogate Copenhaver in the Pulaski county jail.
After Mercer's statement officers used grappling hooks to find the body but as the water at this point is 150 ft. deep they were unsuccessful.
Bowman and Mercer were captured last week in Somerset after a gun battle with Chief of Police Jasper and Patrolman Blade. Bowman opened fire as the officers approached a stolen car which was being hunted. Bowman being wounded twice. Two women were alleged to be wives were also placed in jail. Later Copenhaver was arrested on vagrancy charge also his wife.
It was said that Bowman confessed small robberies at Dry Ridge, Glasgow and other places but denied killing Kaufman. Robberies in which Bowman was implicated were bank hold up at Moundsville, W. Va; Russellville O; Morristown, O; and Higginsport, O, where $26,000 was taken.

NAVY DIVERS TO SEARCH FOR BODY
After unsuccessful attempt to grapple for the body of Franklin government officials at Washington agreed to send U. S. Navy diver to make the search at the bottom of the lake which is over 150 feet deep at this point. Mercer and Jessamine county agreed to pay cost of transportation of outfit and men.
Ordinary river divers equipment can not go to such depth and professional sea divers want $600.

04/18/1934 Nicholasville News : BOWMAN AND MERCER TRIALS - ALLEGED MURDERERS AND HOLD-UP MEN TO BE TRIED HERE AT JUNE TERM OF COURT
Neal Bowman and Stanley Mercer will face trial here at the June term of Circuit Court.
Bowman and Mercer's attorney waved examination on preliminary hearings.
Arrorney for Bowman said he would plead insanity, but others claim he is not of unsound mind.
Bowman laid the Homer Franklin murder and throwing in Lake Herrington to Stanley Mercer. Mercer claimed in his statement that Bowman shot Franklin and he and Loyd Copenhaver were present, and the body was weighted to a big rock and thrown in the lake.
Bowman in a latter statement charged Stanley Mercer with killing George Kaufman at Camp Nelson on March 8 and wounding Will Kaufman.
Friday, Franklin's father swore out a warrant at Harrodsburg for Sam Hager, farmer, his wife and son, who live near where Franklin's body was found in the lake and where he was supposed to have been killed.
The Hager family denied any knowledge of Neal Bowman of his outfit.
Homer Franklin was supposed to have been killed in front of Hager's house and then carried to the lake.
Local sheriff's office has done much work in this case as Bowman's gang was connected with murder of George Kaufman.
A warrant charging murder of Homer Franklin, 17 year old Tennessee youth whose body was found Thursday in Herrington lake, was ____ on Neal Bowman, Ohio outlaw being held at the reformatory in Frankfort for safekeeping.
The warrant was served by Deputy Sheriff Robert Stafford, of Franklin county, who said it was issued in Mercer county, where young Franklin was slain. Stafford said the warrant was signed by Stanley Mercer, being held with Bowman whose statement Saturday led to the search that resulted in the finding of Franklin's body. In his statement, Mercer said Bowman killed the youth to prevent him from talking too much.
Stafford said Bowman appeared surprised when he learned that Mercer had signed the warrant. He said the prisoner had him repeat the name of the signer several times. Bowman seemed relieved, Stafford said, when he learned that he will be kept there until trial.
News of the recovery of Franklin's body and of Mercer's confession had been kept from Bowman. Warden Elmer Deatherage permitted a Somerset attorney to confer with Bowman.
Bowman and Mercer were captured near Somerset and held in connection with a series of crimes including the slaying of George Kaufman, a storekeeper, during a holdup at Camp Nelson.

04/18/1934 Nicholasville News : HOMER FRANKLIN'S BODY FOUND BY NAVY DIVERS
Wednesday was the scene of the largest crowd of spectators gathered on the shore of Lake Herrington, at Kennedy's Bridge to witness the work of two U. S. Navy divers to locate the body of Homer Franklin, 17, who was shot as Stanley Mercer had confessed to Reformatory officials by Neal Bowman, weiged with a rock and thrown into the lake. Mercer had indicated the spot.
The master divers were sent at the request of Mercer and Jessamine county officials when - then efforts with grappling hooks proved unsuccessful.
They were met by Oscar Sanders, Mercer county sheriff, and Sheriff John Combs of Jessamine county. The later took a truck to the depot of the Railway Express Agency and hauled the 2,000 pounds of equipment.
The navy men, Master Divers Edward Obelkevich, George Joyal, and H. P. Matterns were loaned for the work after Con. Virgil Chapman Parks had pressed the request made by Mercer and Jessamine officials.
The divers rigging was installed on a float just over the spot where the body went down. The attempt on Wednesday was unsuccessful. A second attempt was made by Master Diver Matterns, who located the body on the rock cliff at 145 feet depth, Matterns was 6_ minutes down. Returning to the surface and procuring a rope, he again descended, tied the rope to Franklin's legs and brought him up. The entire operation covered 1 hour and 45 minutes. The body was in good condition.

Master Diver Edward Obelkeveth; Gunner's Mate George Joyal; and H. P. Matterns, expert diver, who composed the crew who found Homer Franklin's body at a depth of 145 feet in Lake Herrington, were shown a good week end by Sheriff John Combs and his co-workers. The boys from the U. S. Navy knew their business and the expert work deserves praise. The deep sea divers returned home Sunday to Norfolk, Va.

05/16/1934 Nicholasville News : BOWMAN WILL BE TRIED HERE - JUDGE W. R. SHACKELFORD SAYS HE WILL INSTRUCT GRAND JURY TO INDICT BOWMAN FOR ALLEGED KILLING OF GEORGE KAUFMAN
Neal Bowman, alleged murderer of George Kaufman, Camp Nelson store keeper, and Comer Franklin, whose body was found 145 feet deep in Lake Herrington by U. S. Marine divers near Kennedy bridge on the Mercer county side will be tried in Jessamine county for the murder of George Kaufman, according to statement given Sheriff John Combs by Circuit Judge W. R. Shackelford, Tuesday.
Sheriff John Combs and his force were the leaders in the arrest of Bowman's outfit, which were recently arrested by Somerset police after a pistol duel when Bowman was hit a glancing shot in the head and knocked down.
If Mercer county jury find Bowman and his associates guilty will not prevent a Jessamine county grand jury from bringing an indictment, officials claim in the Kaufman murder.

CHARGED WITH MURDER BY GRAND JURY HAGER ALSO ARRESTED FOR HARBORING BOWMAN
Neal Bowman, confessed bandit and accused double murderer, was indicted Thursday by the Mercer county grand jury for the slaying of Comer Franklin, one of his pals. Earlier a true bill had been returned against Sam Hager, 54, Mercer farmer who was accused of harboring Bowman.
Bond for Bowman held on a Jessamine county warrant at Frankfort reformatory for the fatal shooting of George Kaufman, Camp Nelson merchant, was set at $10,000. Hager, named as an accessory after the fact of Bowman's confessed hold up of the M. M. Royalty store, Main street, early in March, was free on $4,000 bond.
After the indictment was returned against Bowman, Commonwealth's Attorney Emmett Puryear told Judge K. S. Acorn that he would confer with Circuit Judge Rodes Shackelford and Commonwealth Attorney Murray Smith of the Jessamine district relative to which county would try the case first. If Bowman is tried in Mercer county the docket will allow his arraignment during the third week of the current term.
The grand jury action coming without examining trial gave Mercer the first indictment against the desperado. Jessamine county has waived Bowman's examining trial. If he is tried there first, he cannot be arraigned until June 4 when circuit court convenes.
The return of the two indictments supported the confession of Stanley Mercer, who was captured at Somerset with Bowman and Lloyd Copenhaver recently. Mercer was summoned as a witness by the grand jury Wednesday. He was brought from the Frankfort penitentiary by Guard Brumfield.
The true bill against Hager was one of eight returned Wednesday, but the jury did not act on charges against Bowman until shortly before noon Thursday. Immediately after reporting the Bowman indictment (rest not readable)
Bowman was named as the one who shot the Franklin youth in March and threw his body in Herrington Lake. The shooting, according to Mercer's confession, _______ because Bowman feared the youth would squeal on him for the Kaufman murder. At his ________ trial Hager was accused of feeding and housing Bowman though he knew the desperado escaped from the Lima, Ohio, asylum for the criminally insane. The indictment specifically set forth that Hager knew that the Royalty ____ had been committed by Bowman and that Hager made no effort to hand him over to the authorities.
Bond for Hager was the same that set at his county court trial though it was expected, no action was taken on charges against C Franklin and his wife Mrs. Sallee Franklin, who were arraigned with Hager on similar charges. _____ have been held in jail since the trial on default of bonds. 06/06/1934 Nicholasville News : CIRCUIT COURT - NEAL BOWMAN AND STANLEY MERCER INDICTED FOR MURDER OF GEORGE KAUFMAN
The June term of the Jessamine circuit court convened here Monday morning and after impaneling the ____ the grand jury was instructed to investigate fully the various crimes which had been committed within the past few months and other violations of the law.
Early Monday afternoon Neal Bowman and Stanley Mercer were indicted for the murder of George Kaufman, storekeeper at Camp Nelson, and an hour later the two prisoners, accompanied by Warden Deatheridge and four guards of the Frankfort penitentiary were in the courtroom.
Three indictments were read to them, the first indictment charging both men with the offense; the second charging Bowman with the crime and Mercer aiding and abetting and the third charged Mercer with the crime and Bowman aiding and abetting in the offense.
No excitement what ever occurred in the courtroom when the prisoners were brought in both of them pleaded not guilty when the indictments were read.
Mercer stated that he had not employed council and L. Y. McCarty was appointed to defend him. Bowman stated that he would be represented by his attorney for the trial which the court assigned for Tuesday morning, June 12, at 9 o'clock.
Court adjourned at noon until Wednesday morning, June 6, when the case of the Commonwealth against J. L. Gaugh, will be called. Mr. Gaugh cashier of the Wilmore Deposit Bank was charged with receiving deposits for an insolvent bank.

08/15/1934 Nicholasville News : STAY GRANTED NEAL BOWMAN
Neal Bowman, who is still being held at the Frankfort Reformatory, saw death hover near him on two different days last week. Wednesday, August 1, had originally been set for the Ohio bad man's execution by Judge Kindrick Alcorn for the murder of Comer Franklin, boy member of the Bowman gang.
But at the State penitentiary at Eddyville, where all executions must take place, electrocutions are held only on Friday by Governor's order. Therefore it became necessary for a postponement to be made until the nearest Friday, which was August 3. The date of execution was accordingly set for Friday.
Bowman's attorney filed an appeal, however, which automatically extends his life another sixty days. Judge Alcorn allowed the attorneys until October 3 to file an appeal with the state court. Bowman can not be executed now until December 7.
Stanley Mercer, Wayne county lad whose confession led to Bowman's trial in Mercer County was to have died July 22 for the murder of George Kaufman during a holdup at Camp Nelson. Appeal procedure has also delayed his death.

10/10/1934 Nicholasville News : BOWMAN GAINS NEW STAY OF EXECUTION
Neal Bowman, one time Ohio desperado under Mercer county death sentence for murder, gained a new lease on life tries day (?). Roy E. Graves, local attorney, filed a stenographic report of his trial last May for the lake murder of Comer Franklin and a bill of exceptions.
This, according to Mr. Graves, automatically postpones Bowman's execution 60 days more to allow time for filing the case with the court of appeals. As additional time is given while the appellate courts acts, Bowman cannot be sent to the Eddyville electric chair this year.
Bowman originally was sentenced to die Aug. 21, but his attorneys were given until Tuesday to file their bill of exceptions. Bowman at present remains at the Frankfort reformatory.
In filing the petition, Attorney Graves acted together with J. P. Chenault of Nicholasville. Mr. Chenault represented Bowman during his appearance in Jessamien court for the alleged murder of George Kaufman, Camp Nelson merchant. - Harrodsburg Herald

The November term of the Jessamine circuit court convened here Monday morning with Judge Richard C. Stoll, of Lexington, presiding in the absence of Judge W. R. Shackelford of Richmond, who is ill.
The case of the commonwealth against Neal Bowman, charged with the murder of George Kaufman, Camp Nelson merchant, was assigned for hearing Tuesday, November 13.
A Mercer county jury convicted Bowman on an indictment charged with killing Coomer Franklin near Burgin and throwing his body in Herrington lake. Stanley Mercer was convicted by a Jessamine county jury for being implicated in the killing of George Kaufman and wounding Wm. Kaufman in a hold up at their store at Camp Nelson.
Both men having been convicted of murder and given death sentence are in the penitentiary awaiting the outcome of their cases on appeal.
After assigning a few other cases court adjourned until Thursday morning. The following members compose the grand jury: Leslie Jacobs, J. J. According to the 1850 Pennsylvania Census taken on 08/07/1850, Julius Francis was listed as Francis Kauffman, age 40, and born in Germany. He was a coach maker. Christiana was listed as age 30 and born in Germany. Their son Francis was listed as age 11 and born in Germany. Their son Richard was age 4 and born in Pennsylvania. With this information, it looks like Julius Francis was born about 1810 and Christiana was born about 1820, both in Germany. Their son Francis was born about 1839 in Germany, so Julius Francis & Christiana would have married about 1838 or 1839 in Germany. Julius Francis, Christiana, & Francis (at least - looks like there would have been children between 1839 & 1846) came to the USA between 1839 & 1846. Also, according to the 1850 Census, they were living in Philadelphia in the Spring Garden Ward #5.

The family had to have moved to Ohio between 1846 & 1854, as Julius "Eulis" was born in Ohio on 02/27/1854. (Could there have been more children between 1846 & 1854?) Oscar was born about 1856 according to the 1870 Ohio Census which is corroborated by his death certificate. Adolph was born 1859.

The family cannot be found anywhere in the 1860 US Census. Julius Francis, Christiana, Richard, Julius "Eulis", Oscar, & Adolph should have all been together at that time. Francis could have been on his own as he would have been about 21 at the time.

According to the 1860 Ohio, Hamilton Co., Columbia, Montaulk Post Office census, Fred Mossman & his family was living in dwelling #45 & family #49.

Terrace Park Building Survey shows that "Christian" (Christiana?) Kaufman bought the Toll House at 610 Wooster on 02/13/1861 from Fred Mossman. It looks like if Julius Francis was still with the family, the residence would have been in his name, however, George was born 12/25/1861 which was 10 1/2 months after the purchase.

The 1870 Ohio Census shows that Christiana, Julius "Eulis", Oscar, Adolph, & George (who was age 8 & born about 1861) was living Columbia, Hamilton Co., OH - Post Office Madisonville. They were in dwelling #199 & family #200 when the census was taken on 06/10/1870. Their last name was spelled Kaufman. It states that Christiana was born in Saxony & all the children were born in Ohio. Julius Francis was not with the family, so he either died or left between 1861 & the time the census was taken in 1870.

The 1880 Ohio Census shows Christiana was living alone. Her name was spelled Christianna Coffman, age 60, born in Baden. The census shows Columbia Township Eastern Precinct, Hamilton Co., dwelling #107, & family #107. There is no day, but the pre-printed date is June, 1880. None of the children can be found on any 1880 Census.

There is a possibility Christiana died around 1887. The toll house was suddenly in Richard Kaufman's name & went into Adolph Kaufman's name on 05/31/1887. It was then in the name of "Kaufman, E. et al per Shrff. It looks like the property was sold out of the family to Anna Larkin on 03/24/1891.

Julius "Eulis" marries in Jessamine Co., KY in 1881. Adolph marries in Jessamine Co., KY in 1886.

Adolph & Julius "Eulis" appear in Kentucky on the 1900 Kentucky Census. Children were: Francis KAUFMAN, Richard KAUFMAN, Julius "Eulis" KAUFMAN, Oscar KAUFMAN, Adolph KAUFMAN, George KAUFMAN.

Spouse: Charles Calvin "Boots" LANE. Katherine V "Katie" KAUFMAN and Charles Calvin "Boots" LANE were married on 5 July 1919 in Nicholasville, Jessamine Co., KY. Living on Union Mill Rd according to 1930 Jess Census.

You ask about the Hickman Creek Meeting House. As you go out of Nicholasville, after turn on to Chrisman Mill Road, you go about two miles, you see West Lane on the right and Logan's Lane on the left. In the early days this was called Joshua "Hudson's Cross Roads". It was named for Joshua Hudson. He own the land there and where the Meeting House was build. "Hudson's Cross Roads" was a very well known cross roads in it's day. This is where the Boone's Station Road and the Hunters Ferry roads intersected.

The first Baptist Church on the east side of the county, started in a one room log school house over on Marble Creek. Col. John Price was the teacher and preacher also. It was located about a 1/4 mile Marble Creek, down the creek from where the Union Mill (US 169) crosses this creek. It was later mover move up near the road (US 169) a located where the Marble Creek Baptist Church is located today. This is now a colored church today. The old Marble Creek Church, was moved and became the East Hickman Baptist Church. Col. John Price was it's founder.

I think the Hickman Creek Meeting House, at Hudson's Cross Roads was an off shot of the East Hickman Baptist Church.

Less go back to that little one room school house and see were it got it's beginning. Maybe some of the members may give us a idea. Less see now. Their was Mary Boone Bryan, mother of Daniel "Boone" Bryan. She was a sister of Daniel Boone. Their was Flanders Calloway and his wife Jammie Boone, who was a daughter of Daniel Boone.. This family only lived about a mile from the Marble Creek Meeting House.

If you are a history nut and are willing to dig deeper into this, your going to find that many if not most of the above mention, came from the Baptist Church at Boone's Station.

Spouse: Samuel Ray ARNETT. Lillie Mae KAUFMAN and Samuel Ray ARNETT were married on 22 December 1909 in Mt Freedom Church, Jessamine Co., KY. Samuel Ray & Lillie Mae Kaufman Arnett (Aunt Lillie & Uncle Ray) were William Atwood Dean's (Bud) favorite aunt & uncle. They had no children of their own, so they treated Bud like a son. Bud helped Uncle Ray with the farming when ever he wasn't helping his own dad on their farm. They would all go fishing together in Florida every winter after the tobacco sold. Aunt Lillie & Uncle Ray were instrumental in the marriage of Bud & Anna Ruth Sherrow. They had asked Ann to go to Florida with them in the winter of 1957 on a vacation. Aunt Lillie & Uncle Ray got them to go ahead & get married while they were down there & they stayed. They lived in a small trailer in a trailer park. Their daughter, Beverly Mae Dean Zuck, was born in St. Mary's Hospital, West Palm Beach, FL. After Bud's dad became ill with colon cancer & Uncle Ray had passed away in 1959, Bud & Ann moved back to Nicholasville, Jessamine Co., KY. Bud loved Florida & always said he was sorry he ever came back to Kentucky. When Uncle Ray died, Aunt Lillie tried to give Bud his diamond ring. Bud wouldn't take it because he knew it meant so much to Aunt Lillie. She said she would leave it to Bud in her will & said it would be in her safe in the basement along with the purchase & appraisal papers. She also said that Ann was to get her "Havaland" china & sterling silverware. Bud & Ann were also to have her farm & houses. Once Aunt Lillie passed away, the safe was mysteriously broken into. The papers to the ring, Aunt Lillie's will, and quite a bit of cash were missing. Bud did get the ring, but they ended up buying the china at her estate sale. Bud & Ann couldn't afford the silverware. The ring now belongs to Bud's son, William Kevin Dean. The china now belongs to Bud's daughter, Beverly Mae Dean. The farm ended up being purchased by Edward Dietrich, another nephew of Aunt Lillie & Uncle Ray. Upon his passing it was left to his tenant farmer, the Miller family.

Hubert Sageser was married February 10, 1915 to Miss Irene Kaufman at the home of the bride's aunt, Mrs. A. Kaufman in Lexington, KY. The bride was described as a striking brunette and a very popular young lady and Mr. Sageser was described as a young farmer of Jessamine County. They were divorced. Children were: Infant SAGESER.

Kentucky Advocate (Danville, KY): (no date); BRAVE DEED; W. F. Kaufman, of Camp Nelson, Proves Himself a Hero In Saving Young Lady From Drowning; Holding himself and an unconscious girl in the chilly waters of the Kentucky river by grasping a shrub growing out of rocky cliff, while a barge load of frightened dancers looked helplessly on was the courageous feat of W. F. Kaufman, a young merchant of Camp Nelson, Saturday night. The barge, loaded with grain for the E. J. Curley distillery, had been unloaded Friday, and on Friday evening, following a usual custom, the young people of Camp Nelson swept the barge decks and held a dance there. Tarpaulins were hung about the deck and during the intermission Miss Clara McCourt, of Wilmore, leaned against the curtain and fell backward into the water. The crowd on the barge was panic-stricken, and Miss McCourt vanished beneath the water. She came up three tims and then sank like a stone. Mr. Kaufman, who was on the opposite side of the boat, seeing the commotion, ran across the deck and, fully clothed, leaped into the river. Miss McCourt was nowhere visible, so he dived, and found her near the bottom of the river, which at that point, is some eighteen feet deep. With her apparently lifeless form he then swam to the river bank, where its steep sides offered no foothold. His efforts to hold the girl above water were made almost futile by the steepness of the rocky cliff and by the darkness, the canvas curtain screening the lights from the barge. He finally was able to seize the branches of a small shrub which grew out of the rock, holding on with one hand, while he supported the weight of the unconscious girl with the free arm. He remained in this situation until a boat could be launched and paddled around to his dangerous position. Miss McCourt was placed in the boat and taken to the barge, where, after some minutes, she was resuscitated. Mr. Kaufman received the warmest praise for his courage and presence of mind. Neither he nor Miss McCourt suffered any serious effects from the experience. Parents: Julius "Eulis" KAUFMAN and Rosa BECKER.

Spouse: Pauline BRAMBLETT. Pauline BRAMBLETT and Webb Franklin KAUFMAN were married on 10 October 1925 in Lucas Co., OH. Their Michigan marriage record indicates that this was Webb's 1st marriage & Pauline's 2nd. Bramblett could possibly be a married name instead of maiden. She was married to William Ray and divorced him before she married Webb Kaufman.

Their divorce records indicates they were married in Toledo, OH on 10/10/1925. Their marriage says they were married on 09/13/1924 in Wayne Co., MI. After more research, it looks like they applied for a marriage license in Wayne Co., MI on 09/13/1924, however, it doesn't look like they actually got married until 10/10/1925 in Ohio and had to get another license. They were divorced on 12 January 1928. The divorce record shows that Pauline was the libelant. The reason stated was extreme cruelty. An absolute divorce was granted and not contested. Filing petition was 11/02/1927; decree or judgment was 01/12/1928. There was no alimony granted and no children in the family.

The 1920 Kentucky Census has Swill listed as "G George" in error.

Edna should have appeared on the 1910 Kentucky Census as the census is dated 04/19/1910 & Edna was born on the 1st of April. The census shows Willie & Lola Kaufman married 1 year with no children & none being born. Needs further research. Children were: Edna Earl KAUFMAN, Charles William "Bus or Buster" KAUFMAN, William KAUFMAN II.
