Sterling Advocate, 6 June 1962 - William Harrison Dean served as Magistrate DEAN, WILLIAM HARRISON William Harrison Dean died at his home in the Little Hickman neighborhood, Friday night, January 21, after an illness of several months. Mr. Dean was born near Sulphur Well, May 1, 1841 and was the third son of ten children of Harrison and Nancy Owens Dean, both of whom were natives of this county. He was reared on a farm and educated in the public schools and in 1851 enlisted in the Federal Army at Camp Dick Robinson with Col. Frank Woolford, First Kentucky Regiment, Co. K, Nelson Burris, captain. Mr. Dean was a cavalryman and was in the greater part of Sherman's march to the sea and was a valiant soldier. Out of 800 cavalry, all but 300 were taken prisoners at Macon, Ga., Mr. Dean being among the number. The prisoners were sent to Lexington, Ky., and joined the command of Gen. Burbridge, went to Salt Works, Va., where they were forced to retreat shortly afterwards. They were mustered out in December 1864. In February 1866, Mr. Dean was married to Miss Fannie Mays of this county, who, with five children of a family of fourteen, survive, Those living are: Dr. Samuel Dean of Howe, Okla; T. R. Dean of Sapalpa, Okla.; Sherman and Woolford Dean of Little Hickman; Mr. W. W. Roberts of this city, Mrs. Carlisle Hulett, Mrs. Edward Carter, Mrs. Floyd Brooks and Mrs. Samuel Farley of this county. Five brothers, Harvey, John and Alex Dean of Bryantsville; March Dean of Boyle County and M. L. Dean and a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Carter of this county. Mr. Dean was a descendant of one of the oldest and best known families in Jessamine County. At the Dean family reunion, held at the old Dean homestead near Pink, Aug. 29, 1903, there were present 125 children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Harrison and Nancy Owens Dean. The reunions held for several years were noted gatherings that were anticipated and enjoyed by not only the members of the Dean family, but close friends who regarded it a pleasure and honor to be present. Mr. Dean was one of the most highly respected citizens of this county, firm in convictions and fearless in the discharge of duty. He was a member of the Christian Church and served for seven years as magistrate. Funeral services were held from the late residence Monday morning, conducted by Rev. R. C. Bell, assisted by Rev. G.W. Nutter, followed by interment in Maple Grove Cemetery. WILLIAM H. DEAN was born three miles south of Nicholasville, near Sulphur Well in Jessamine County, May 1, 1841, the third son of Harrison and Nancy (Owen) Dean. William H. was reared on a farm and educated at the common schools; farmed until October 20, 1861, then enlisted in the Federal Army at Camp Dick Robinson, in Garrard County, Ky., Col. Frank Woolford's First Kentucky Regiment, Company K, Nelson Burris, captain. William H. Dean was a cavalry soldier, was in the greater part of Sherman's march to the sea; started with Sherman in Tennessee and went with him to Macon, Ga. The 300 were brought out by Silas Adams, and William Dean was among them. About two weeks after this trouble, he and the remaining 300 went back to Atlanta, Ga., and were shipped to Lexington, Ky., where they were supplied with more horses; went to Camp Nelson for arms, then joined Gen. Burbridge and went to Salt Works, Va., where they were forced to retreat and went back to Big Sandy, and soon after were mustered out about Christmas, 1864. Mr. Dean then bought the farm he now lives on of 350 acres in Sulphur Well District, eight miles southeast of Nicholasville, on the Watts Mills and Sugar Creek Turnpike. He married, February 8, 1866, Miss Fannie Mays of Jessamine County, daughter of William and Elizabeth (Foster) Mays. William Mays was born in Virginia, January 1, 1794, moved to Jessamine County with his parents when he was only six years old and was the youngest son of William Mays, Sr., of Virginia. William Mays, Jr., died in July, 1873. Elizabeth (Foster) Mays was born in Jessamine County, July 15, 1818, and is still living on his farm of 230 acres. Thirteen children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Dean, nine of whom are still living: Laura B., born November 23, 1866, married to John Hamilton; Arkie, born November 23, 1867, married to E. Carter; Samuel C., born December 20, 1871; Thomas R., November 5, 1873; Nannie E., August 25, 1875; Woolford, October 14, 1878; Sherman, October 9, 1880; Hallie E., March 3, 1882, and Mattie B., July 4, 1885. Four are deceased: William H., Emmie P. and two in infancy. Mr. Dean is engaged in farming and stock raising and makes a speciality [sic] of raising mules, owning a fine Jack. He is a strict member of the Christian Church. Central Record - 07/27/1916 - lists an auction ad for the heirs of Wm. H. Dean farm which would take place on 08/02/1916.
