Obit - Christian Magazine of the South - At her residence on Clear Creek, Jessamine Co., KY., on Monday morning, November 19th, Mrs. Sarah January, relict of Ephraim January, in the 87th year of her age. She was one of the very few survivors of the first settlers of Kentucky. With her husband and father, Andrew McConnell and his family, she emigrated to Kentucky from Pennsylvania in the year 1780, descending the Ohio River to Louisville and located themselves for a few months in the fort at Spring Station. about 6 miles from Louisville, and thence went to the fort at Harrodsburg, where they lived about a year, from which place they removed to the fort at Lexington, where they lived until after the memorable Battle of Blue Lick, in which her father was killed. She resided in the fort at Lexington when the first in that fort was born, (which child was the late Mrs. Robert Wickliffe, and the daughter of Col. Todd, who was fell at the Blue Lick Battle). In the fall of 1783, or spring of 1784, she removed to the farm on Clear Creek, thirteen miles from Lexington, where she resided up to the time of her death, a period of about 66 years. At an early period she and her husband became members of the Associate Reformed Church, located on their farm, called Ebenezer, (on ground given to and conveyed to the church by her husband) at the time under the care of Rev. Adam Rankin, and afterwards, Rev. R. H. Bishop, D. D. For nearly twenty seven years she was left a widow, her husband having died in 1823. She was the mother of a large family and reared eleven children, five sons and six daughters, all of whom have married and settled in three or four different states, and all are members of the same branch of the Church of Christ.
