Lexington Herald - Leader July 22, 1932
A DEATH FROM BASEBALL -- There have been few deaths from baseball in the past few years. The rules of this and other games including football and basketball have been modified with a view to making them safer. The entire state will join in sympathy for the family of Craig Dean, 19-year-old-boy of Little Hickman community, in Jessamine County, who died as a result of being struck by a ball while playing baseball in Nicholaville. He sustained a fractured skull and an operation failed to save his life. Baseball does not exact a heavy toll in casualties, but like all other sports, it has it's hazards as is shown by this untimely and regrettable fatality.

CRAIGS' ACCIDENT as told to Billie Hunt by Dorothy Dean Hager - The minister of the Wesley Chapel Methodist Church, located on Sugar Creek Pike, had tried for quite some time to persuade the boys of the Little Hickman community to stop playing baseball on Sundays. Craig was of a mind to discontinue the Sunday games, but went to the pasture on this particular Sunday, July 17, 1932, thinking it would be his last Sunday to play. A. Dietrick was pitching and it was Craig's turn at bat. The ball hit Craig in the head, knocking him out. His teammates laid him under a shade tree and some went to tell his family. When he regained consciousness, he was taken home but complained of severe head pains, He was given lots of aspirin for the pain. A day later, he was taken to Dr. Lee Williams, who had him admitted to Good Samaritan Hospital in Lexington and surgery was performed. Dr. Williams had only taken a "short" course in surgery and Dorothy states that Craig's head was all messed up after surgery. Craig never regained consciousness after the surgery. The Sunday baseball games were discontinued. Parents: Harvey Albert DEAN and Elva Bell KEMP.
