A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, in the chapel at Brothers College on the campus of Drew University, Madison Avenue, Madison, for Florence Lydia McEnally Zuck, formerly of Madison, who died Saturday, June 4, 2004, at the Longue Vie nursing home near Beirut, Lebanon, following a long illness. She was 92. Born Feb. 5, 1912, in Winterpock, Va., the ninth child of Dolly McFaul McEnally and William Wolcott McEnally, Mrs. Zuck lived in Cleveland, Ohio, Chicago, Ill., and Knoxville, Tenn., before coming to Madison in 1949. During the latter years of the Great Depression, Mrs. Zuck worked at settlement houses as a nursery school teacher in Chicago and Knoxville, and after World War II, she and her husband, Robert Karl Zuck, established the botany department at Drew University in 1947. The arboretum at Drew is named in their honor. A laboratory instructor and later an associate professor of botany, she nurtured a scientific understanding of plants in the minds of her students until her retirement in 1980. Her own education began in a one-room schoolhouse in Virginia, and then included high school in Cleveland and Chicago, where she graduated and was offered a tuition scholarship to Oberlin (Ohio) College with free room and board in the home of a professor of the classics. She graduated in 1933 from the Oberlin Kindergarten Primary Training School, where she met her future husband and where her lifelong passion for plants and botanical education began, and from Oberlin College in 1936 with a degree in botany. She helped remodel a large, old brick carriage house on Glenwild Road in Madison beginning in 1953, transforming it into a comfortable residence and turning the tangled acreage surrounding it into a gardener's paradise that was much admired and photographed. Mrs. Zuck was involved in the nascent environmental movement of the 1960s, helping to spearhead the protection of the Great Swamp, which the New York Port Authority was seeking to transform into a jetport. Her work cataloguing the botanical diversity of the swamp played a pivotal role in the eventual designation of the site as a National Wilderness Area. She served on a variety of conservation and shade tree commissions at the state and local levels, helping to instill a deeper understanding of the value of plant life. "She had a deep appreciation for the beauty of her adopted state of New Jersey, and devoted much energy to widening the public's understanding and appreciation of the state's natural assets," her family noted. Mrs. Zuck was a Girl Scout and Boy Scout troop leader, and taught Sunday school at the Madison United Methodist Church. Her life was documented in "Past and Promise: Lives of New Jersey Women." A life member of the Garden Club of Madison, her gardens were featured in "Garden Design" magazine, in the summer of 1985, and later included in the book, "American Gardens, A Tour of the Nation's Finest Private Gardens." Her gardens were often included on tours, and for years also served as a convenient field laboratory for botany classes. Mrs. Zuck served as the chairwoman of the Madison Shade Tree Authority, as well as the Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morris Township, the Willowwood Foundation in Chester Township, the Morris Museum in Morris Township, and the Reeves-Reed Arboretum in Summit. In 1991, she was honored as "Madisonian of the Year" by the Madison Rotary Club for her contributions to the community. "She was deeply moved by human suffering and lived her life with utmost compassion for all living things," her family noted, adding that a student once described her as the "Pantheistic Mrs. Zuck." "If ever a woman lived as close to the Christian ideal of loving her neighbor as herself, it was she," her family noted. Her husband, Robert Karl Zuck, died in 1996 in Lincoln, R.I. She is survived by three sons, David Zuck of Midlothian, Va., Robert Zuck of Lincoln, R.I., and Michael Zuck of Bangor, Maine; a daughter, Julia Rea of Dresden, Maine; a sister, Mary Jane Randle of Longue Vie; eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Interment was private. Her family invites those with special memories of Mrs. Zuck to share them at the Oct. 9 memorial service and reception.
